Adolescent Drug and alcohol abuse
by Nikki
Babbit

Product Description:
Parents are often the last to know about their children's involvement with
alcohol or drugs. Adolescent drug abuse and chemical dependency can happen to
any teenager, whatever their economic level, neighborhood, school, church
attendance, or family make-up. Chemical abusers do whatever they can to conceal
their use. Families can rationalize the behaviors, particularly in adolescence,
as being caused by something other than chemicals. Is the defiance a normal
separation from parents? Adolescent hormones kicking in? Adolescent Drug and
Alcohol Abuse offers parents clear information, support, and guidance:
- Understand the disease model of drug abuse and that you
didn't cause it
- Overcome family confusion, denial, and excuses to get your
child the help he needs
- Find allies in the community
- Know what to look for in chemical assessment and treatment
facilities
- Gain serenity and happiness for yourself
- Learn that you are not alone Author Nikki Babbit has
counseled thousands of parents and teens about drug and alcohol abuse and
dependency. Her message, and the message of the families whose stories fill
this book, is one of encouragement and hope for the future.

Understanding drugs of abuse
by Mim Landry

Book description:
I wrote this book for two broad audiences and purposes. First, it is intended to
provide useful information to lay but informed readers who want to understand
the drugs of abuse and the addiction and treatment processes. Second, it can be
used as a textbook in a university addiction studies program and as a reference
guide to the drugs of abuse and the processes of addiction, treatment, and
recovery. One of the things that fueled my interest to write the book is the
fact that there are many poorly-researched and highly-opinionated books on
substance abuse-related issues. I made an intense effort to ensure that this
book was research-based, heavily referenced, objective, and helpful.
The first half of the book focuses on the drugs of abuse, how they work, and how
they affect biological, psychological, and social functioning. It was written in
part to answer such frequently-asked questions as "How does this drug work?" and
"Is this drug addictive?" The second half of the book provides a good
description of the addiction process, and walks the reader through the treatment
and recovery processes. It also provides additional attention to such issues as
individuals with coexisting psychiatric and substance use disorders, genetics
and alcoholism, and adolescent addiction. Throughout, this book helps the reader
to understand that addiction, treatment, recovery, and even relapse are all
dynamic biopsychosocial processes. |

Innovations in Adolescent Substance Abuse
Interventions
by Eric F. Wagner, Holly Waldron,

Book description
Hardbound. Innovations in Adolescent Substance Abuse Interventions
provides, for the first time, a single reference source for state-of-the-art,
empirically tested approaches to assessing, preventing, and treating adolescent
substance abuse problems. Previous texts on adolescent substance abuse have
given limited attention to intervention, have been non-empirical in orientation,
or have been devoted to a single intervention approach. This is remarkable given
increasing international concern about how to address substance use problems
among youth. The book includes sixteen chapters from leaders in the field, and
the scope of the book includes assessment, primary prevention, secondary
prevention, and treatment.
A limited number of inspection copies of this book are available for qualified
course instructors. Requests for an Examination Copy (please provide full course
details) should be sent via e-mail to: j.kershaw@elsevier.nl |

Bridges to Recovery : Addiction, Family Therapy,
and Multicultural Treatment
by Jo-ann Krestan

Book description
At last, a book that defines a new language for treating substance abuse
in an increasingly culturally diverse population. Until now, therapists,
counselors, and teachers who treat addiction within the context of the whole
family have had to make do with outdated one-size-fits-all theories and
treatment programs.
Bridges to Recovery is the first book to bring together experts from three major
fields within psychotherapy -- family therapy, addiction counseling and
multicultural treatment -- to provide a practical and flexible framework for
working with families within their individual cultural contexts. Drawing upon
case studies, clinical anecdotes and proven treatment methods, Bridges to
Recovery provides practitioners with a unique insight into the individual
cultural nuances that make addiction recovery a very personal journey.
Jo-Ann Krestan, co-author of the classic book The Responsibility Trap: A
Blueprint for Treating the Alcoholic Family, and her contributors integrate the
latest ideas and research to offer a foundation for addiction treatment that
brings to the forefront the cultural thinking that affects alcohol and drug
use/abuse among Native Americans, Jewish Americans, African Americans, West
Indians, Asian Americans, Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans and groups of
European origin. This book will be an invaluable asset to teachers and students
in clinical social work, psychology and substance abuse counseling programs,
setting the standard for education and treatment at the beginning of the 21st
century. |
