Sexually Aggressive Children : Coming To Understand Them
by Sharon K. Araji (Editor) "As noted in the Introduction, this book is about children 12 or less years of age who act sexually aggressive toward others who are younger..." (more)

Book description:
In an accessible and sensitive fashion, Sexually Aggressive Children provides a comprehensive overview of sexual abuse perpetrated by children 12 years old and younger. Drawing attention to this frequently overlooked population, author Sharon K. Araji explores the familial, extrafamilial, and situtational factors conducive to various types of sexual abuse by children so young. For professionals and researchers forced to consider sexually aggressive acts by children as young as 2 or 3, this book examines the theories and frameworks used to explain this kind of behavior and outlines their associated social and psychological characteristics. Araji identifies nine programs and practices designed by therapists treating individuals, families, and groups dealing with preadolescent sexually aggressive behavior and concludes with an assessment on the reporting and investigation of cases. Sexually Aggressive Children also adds recommendations for closing the current gaps in both the social and criminal justice systems that impede the appropriate identification, processing, and treatment of sexually aggressive children. This book will help researchers and professionals to coordinate efforts to successfully address how to deal with sexually aggressive children. Sexually Aggressive Children will be a valuable resource for all those in the multidisciplinary fields of child abuse and interpersonal violence, including academics and practitioners in social work, clinical/counseling psychology, and criminology/criminal justice.

The Juvenile Sex Offender
by Howard E. Barbaree (Editor), William L. Marshall (Editor), Stephen M. Hudson (Editor) "This chapter is intended to place juvenile sex offenders in a context, in terms of their relation to the problem of sexual assault in our..." (more)

Book description:
There has been an extraordinary amount of published research and theory on sexual assault by adult male offenders. Yet, little has been written about the juvenile or adolescent sex offender, either as a subject of study in his own right, or in an effort to understand the developmental processes which may lead to sexually assaultive behavior in adults. Filling a gap in the literature, this comprehensive volume provides a detailed examination of the juvenile sexual offender, and what is known about the development of sexually assaultive behavior. Written by leading researchers, chapters first define terms and concepts and outline the research, professional, and legal issues relevant to treatment of the juvenile sex offender. Salient historical, personality, and behavioral characteristics which may differentiate various important subgroupings of these offenders are also described. The book then focuses on the development of the juvenile sexual offender, and how this development differs from that of normal adolescents. Chapters examine how sexuality evolves and manifests itself in both the normal and the deviant teenager, and why deviant behaviors often continue into adulthood. Sexual arousal and preferences of the adolescent offender, and processes involving social bonds and influences on the development of deviant sexuality are also discussed. Finally, the book explores ways in which society might respond to prevent or control the occurrence of sexual assault by juveniles. A comprehensive approach to treatment is presented that encompasses criminal justice and mental health systems, cognitive-behavioral interventions, pharmacological approaches, relapse prevention, and supervision. Highly informative and useful, this text is particularly important to psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and other mental health clinicians working with juvenile sexual offenders, their families, and their victims. Similarly, professionals in forensic, developmental or child and family studies will also find it of particular interest. It also serves as an ideal text for advanced courses on juvenile sexual offenders, or as supplementary reading for students of forensic psychology or psychiatry.

Sexualized Children: Assessment and Treatment of Sexualized Children and Children Who Molest
by Eliana Gil, Toni Cavanagh Johnson

Book review:
Drs. Gil & Johnson do an extraordinary job of presenting the complex dynamics that interplay in the development of children in families whose primary dysfunction is sexualized in nature. Developmental norms are provided, too, in order to distinguish expected behaviors from those which are unusual. The authors are quite capable of tieing together theory with case material, and then providing meaningful assessment and treatment information, not only for individuals but for groups and families as well. This book is a must-buy for all mental health professionals, and is sometimes difficult to find, so BUY IT.
