Peer Mediation: Conflict
Resolution in Schools: Student Manual
by Fred Schrumpf, Donna K. Crawford,
Richard J. Bodine

Book
description:
The process and skills required for effective mediation are
extremely difficult for young and old alike to grasp. It is
something that is within each and every one of us, but the
skills are often not used with such concentration and
purpose. Fred Schrump's Peer Mediation: Conflict Resolution
in Schools is an effective means of teaching students peer
mediation skills as well as providing students with
alternative skills for resolving conflict. The ultimate goal
being to replace punitive administrative discipline and
empower students to resolve conflicts on their own. Having
used this manual to install a peer mediation program in a
Washington, DC public high school it has proved invaluable
in teaching students the skills of mediation. The six steps
are clearly spelled out with charts that enable the students
to grasp the flow of the mediation process. The exercises
are also very effective at reiterating the specific areas of
concentration new to most students. The role plays are
extremely helpful to provide meaningful practice before
actual situations. All in all the manual provides a clear
path toward developing a peer mediation program and should
be recommended to all those with limited time, but who
recognize the importance of peer mediation in the schools.

Everything you need to know about peer mediation
by Nancy N. Rue

Book description:
Suitable for grade 7 and up. A book that offers broad but
superficial coverage of a timely issue. The short chapters,
large print, bold headings, and stock photographs are typical of
the series. Rue begins with a brief introduction to peer
mediation and the role it can play in resolving conflict. She
goes on to look at the particulars: the rules, the skills
needed, how peer mediators are trained, the typical step-by-step
process involved, and how the techniques can be used to resolve
different kinds of conflicts in a variety of settings. The
author uses scenarios involving teens to illustrate her points.
The book concludes with a directory of help resources. Schools
with such programs in place or those considering the initiation
of one may find this a useful addition.

Peer mediation: A process for primary schools
by Jerry Tyrrell and Marian Liebmann

Book description:
Challenging society's obsession with academic achievement as the
sole measure of an individual's potential, and celebrating the
process that allows children to resolve each other's problems
and conflicts, the pioneering work by an internationally
recognized expert argues that schools must change to allow
children to develop their mediation skills in order that they
can fully contribute to the economy and to society. Both
authoritative and accessible, the text is an invaluable
reference for anyone involved in education as well as those
looking for alternative approaches to discipline, who recognize
the need for a change in relationships within schools
