Family Solutions: Multiple Family Group Interventions with At-Risk Youth (Hardcover)

by William H. Quinn

Reviews
William J. Doherty, Ph.D, is Professor of Family Social Science and Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota, and a Past President of the National Council on Family Relations
A breakthrough on family and community treatment of youth at risk. I was inspired from start to finish.

"In a time where evidence-based practice models are leading the way as the treatments of choice for at-risk troubled youth, William H. Quinn offers us an innovative and highly effective treatment approach for juvenile offenders and other serious youth behavioral difficulties. What is most unique about Quinn's Family Solutions Program is its multiple family group format, which he clearly demonstrates through many case examples and solid research, provides families with a strong sense of community, multiple strengths and resources to draw from for support, and can produce rapid changes on individual, family system, and larger systems levels. This book is a timely and valuable contribution to the family therapy literature.."
Matthew D. Selekman, MSW, Co-Director of Partners for Collaborative Solutions

"A breakthrough on family and community treatment of youth at risk. This book takes the reader inside a model that is effective, collaborative, and respectful of what families can offer one another in preventing more serious problems in the future. I loved learning the nitty-gritties about how this model works in the real world, including early mistakes and current challenges in using this novel approach--a testament to Bill Quinn's honesty and transparency. I was inspired from start to finish.."

Handbook of Family Development and Intervention (Hardcover)

by William C. Nichols (Editor), Mary Anne Pace-Nichols (Editor), Dorothy S. Becvar (Editor), Augustus Y. Napier (Editor)

Review
"A well conceived and worthwhile resource for the family therapy academic or practitioner." (The Family Journal, January 2002)
"The expertise made available by the authors is both broad and deep. All hold clinical as well as scientific credentials. The editors' broad network was an important resource in recruiting authors. Bill Nichols and Mary Anne Pace-Nichols are long time authors, academicians, and leaders in the fields of family studies and MFT. Dorothy Becvar is a well-known leader and author. Gus Napier is near legend among MFT's as a result of the "Family Crucible". This group of Editors did an excellent job of organizing the authors' work into a text that fills a large gap in the literature." (Journal of Marriage and Family, Feb 02)

"In this magnificent volume, the editors make a major contribution that integrates individual and family development concepts and therapeutic applications by bringing together scholarly yet fresh contributions. The inclusion of various family forms and of families with special needs makes this volume especially relevant to the treatment of contemporary families as we enter the new millennium. This superb Handbook should be mandatory reading and an excellent reference for teachers, researchers, and therapists at all levels of development."Celia J. Falicov, PhD President, 19992001 American Family Therapy Academy

Book Description
Like all complex living systems, a family, during its life course, proceeds through predictable stages of development. Yet every family is different, its uniqueness defined and continually redefined by an open-ended array of structural, biological, and sociocultural variables. And, as with all living things, a familys continued well-being depends upon its ability to adapt to changes arising from both within the family system and without.

First postulated in the 1940s, these basic ideas constitute the conceptual core of modern family development theory. From them has blossomed an impressive body of knowledge about family health and illness, without which much of the progress occurring in family therapy over the past half-century would not have been possible.

This book does much to promote continued progress in the practical application of family development theory by affording family therapists an unparalleled opportunity to acquaint themselves with the most important trends in family development theory to emerge over the past decade.
In it you will find contributions from leading theorists, researchers, and clinicians, arranged so as to provide a systematic treatment of the latest thinking on family development seen from both the systemic viewpoint and that of individual members of the system.

Comprehensive in scope, this book explores the patterns, processes, and dynamics inherent in "traditional" families, as well as in important structural variantssuch as single-parent and gay and lesbian familiesand families with special needs and problems, including divorce, physical abuse, and disabilities.
Since progress in the social sciences is as much about formulating viable new ways of seeing as it is about determining quantifiable facts, the editors offer equal time to an array of influential and sometimes radically conflicting schools of thought, including sociobiology, social psychology, constructionism, multiculturalism, postmodernism, and feminism. Mainstream family therapists will find much in this handbook that they will consider controversial. In some cases readers may even be outraged by the views expressed. Yet, thanks to the high caliber of scholarship, intellect, and professionalism evidenced throughout, none of the ideas advanced in Handbook of Family Development and Intervention can be easily dismissed, and all have something of value to offer the thoughtful, dedicated family therapist.

Handbook of Family Development and Intervention is a valuable professional resource for all couples and family therapists. It is also must reading for graduate students in family psychology, family therapy, social work, and counseling.

Protecting Children from Domestic Violence : Strategies for Community Intervention (Hardcover)

by Peter Jaffe

Reviews
"For far too long, children exposed to domestic violence have been overlooked--if not forgotten--by those who should be protecting them and providing effective interventions. This book is a welcome and invaluable resource for a range of practitioners working in the area of domestic violence. Readers from different fields will be enlightened as to the roles each might play in addressing children's needs. As a text, the book will be useful in the classrooms of law schools, law enforcement training academies, and graduate schools of social work and psychology, to name just a few."--Honorable Peter C. Macdonald, (Retired), District Judge, Third Judicial District, Commonwealth of Kentucky; Co-chair, Family Violence Committee, National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges

"This volume brings together the latest research about the effects of domestic violence on children and how our policies and programs should respond. It is a critical desk reference for policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and educators who care about and advocate for the safety of children."--Diane DePanfilis, PhD, MSW, Institute for Human Services Policy, University of Maryland School of Social Work

"An important contribution. This comprehensive volume tackles ongoing and emerging issues--such as whether childhood exposure to domestic violence should be defined as maltreatment--and fills in gaps in the existing domestic violence literature. The book also addresses assessment and intervention from the individual to the community levels. It will be a valuable resource for professionals in the areas of child welfare, intimate partner violence, law enforcement, and family and criminal law, as well as for faculty in social work, child development, criminal justice, and related programs."--Caroline L. Burry, PhD, School of Social Work, University of Maryland, Baltimore

"...an excellent resource on the vexing problem of children exposed to domestic violence....This book is well written, and is packed with practical advice on responding to the problem of children exposed to domestic violence. This book is highly recommended for all professionals who work with domestic violence problem[s]."--Child Abuse & Neglect

"Provides practitioners, policy makers, and researchers with an excellent overview of current knowledge and practices in working with children exposed to domestic violence....Avoiding overly simplistic answers to...complex situations, the contributors challenge the assumption that interventions are required in all cases and emphasize broad-based services that address the problem at multiple levels."--Canadian Psychology

Community Treatment for Youth : Evidence-Based Interventions for Severe Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (Innovations in Practice and Service Delivery with Vulnerable Populations)

by Barbara Burns, Kimberly Hoagwood

Book Description
This outstanding textbook presents innovative interventions for youth with severe emotional and behavioral disorders. Community Treatment for Youth is designed to fill a gap between the knowledge base and clinical practice through its presentation of theory, practice parameters, training
requirements, and research evidence. Featuring community-based and state-of-the-art services for youth with severe emotional and behavioral disorders and their families, this volume describes each intervention in depth, along with the supporting evidence for its utility. Most chapters present a
single intervention as an alternative to institutional care. Shared characteristics of these interventions include delivery of services in the community (homes, schools, and neighborhoods) provided largely by parents and paraprofessional staff. The interventions are appropriate to use in any of the
child human services sectors and have been developed in the field with real-world child and family clients. In addition, they offer a reduced cost in comparison to institutional care. Several chapters address diagnostic-specific psychosocial and psychopharmacological treatments, which are likely to
be provided as adjunctive treatment in a clinical setting. Designed to update professionals in the field about effective services, Community Treatment for Youth will serve as a resource for academics, policymakers, practitioners, consumers, and researchers.
