Strengthening Families Program will offer their free 14-week program to families with youth ages 12-16, starting March 1 at the offices of ARP, Addiction Recovery and Prevention, 356 Biltmore Ave.
Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally-recognized parenting and family-building skills program for high-risk families, proven to reduce problem behaviors, delinquency and alcohol and drug abuse in children, and to improve social skills and school performance.
The new Strengthening Families Program group for families with youth ages 12-16, will meet 5:30 – 8 p.m. on Monday nights for 14 weeks. Each evening begins with a family dinner. Following the meal, youth classes and parenting classes are taught separately for one hour by certified facilitators. Families regroup for the final hour of the program, to practice what they have learned.
The program includes a weekly family meal, child care for younger siblings and help with transportation within Buncombe County, as needed.
Families eligible for referral are those with risk factors such as: family substance abuse or mental health issues; youth school truancy or academic problems; youth behavioral issues; or family discipline, communication or income-related issues.
