Our best minds deserve thanks
Greater Victoria is home to some of the finest minds in Canada.
A bold statement, to be sure, but one that is not hard to prove. All we have to do is point to the six Craigdarroch Research Awards, handed out last week by the University of Victoria. The recipients are making life better in Victoria and around the world.
Jessica Ball, from the School of Child and Youth Care, has done research into aboriginal issues that has been translated into action. Ball's work has resulted in improved social policies, effective community programs and informed individual decision-making.
The winners were deemed to be the very best among a strong group of contenders. There are many other researchers at the university, people determined to make a difference in their community. These people bring their brilliance to the darkest corners, and shine a light for the rest of us.
Most of the time, they toil in obscurity. Every now and then, though, it makes sense for us to note that the University of Victoria is not just about rabbits and new buildings along the Ring Road.
It's also about smart, hard-working people who are determined to make the world a better place. They are a credit to our community, and they deserve our thanks.
